Long before the arrival of the Spaniards in the Philippines, large population centers already developped in Batangas. The province was negotiated with the Chinese since the Yuan Dynasty until the first phase of the Ming Dynasty in the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. The inhabitants of the province were also negotiated with Japan and India. The Spanish tyranny on the islands was a scandal among the inhabitants. The soldiers raped women and minor girls. They had forbidden Filipino inhabitants to wear clothes like Europeans, for fear they would hide weapons under their clothes. Farmers were forbidden to visit the city center and the government places with their Bolo or machete (wearing a Bolo-machete is a Philippine tradition that goes back centuries before the arrival of the conquistadors, walk out without a machete is a humiliation).
This led to a revolt in the province of Batangas in 1572, when the formidable “Balisong” tagal weapon “Bali (ng) Sung (ay)” was born. named by the neighborhood where they make blades of water buffalo horn (Bubalus bubalis), Kulaban (or blade of buffalo horn used to pick the coconut meat).
The armorer batangueños had the idea to manufacture balisongs following the example of the Castilian fan, the Spanish soldiers did not think that a weapon could be hidden thus. The middle of the fan hides a buffalo horn blade. Later, it will be replaced by a metal blade.
